Old video of Ukrainian missile attack on Russia falsely shared as Iran’s attack on Saudi Arabia

Iran has struck and damaged at least three American bases in the Middle East following a major escalation in regional hostilities that resumed on 7 July, 2026. Against this backdrop, a video of a huge explosion in a city at nighttime has been shared on social media with the claim that it shows Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Airbase getting hit by Iranian missiles.

Our investigation began with a reverse image search of key frames from the viral video, which led us to an extended version of the same video uploaded to the official YouTube channel of The Telegraph on 24 March 2024. The caption states, “Huge explosions rock Sevastopol after Ukrainian missile attack.” 

The description mentions that the Ukrainian military claims to have hit two Russian warships and other facilities in the Black Sea, including a communications center and infrastructure facilities belonging to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The extent of the damage is unknown, but a Russian official reported a major Ukrainian air attack and over 10 missiles being shot down over Sevastopol.

This indicates that the viral video is old and not related to the recent tensions.

Moving forward, we found more reports of this incident. It states Ukraine reported the destruction of two of Russia’s large landing ships, followed by a damaging strike on the Ivan Khurs, an intelligence-collecting ship. The report quotes a Ukrainian reporter like this “Ukrainian missiles struck the 744th Communications Center of the Black Sea Fleet in Russian-occupied Sevastopol, Crimea, which is the communication and coordination nerve center of Russian air, navy, and air Défense assets in the Black Sea.”

So, all this evidence indicates that the video from Crimea’s Sevastopol was falsely shared as showing Iran’s missile attack on Saudi Arabia.
