A video of a woman brutally beaten by a few women in uniforms went viral on social media. Sharing the video, users are claiming that in the video a Muslim woman can be seen getting beaten by Hindutvavadis. A Facebook user wrote, “A video that the whole world should watch. A Muslim woman was brutally beaten by filthy cow worshipers in Manipur state, India”.

The video went viral on Twitter also. Sharing the video, a user tweeted, “ভারতের মনিপুরে গরুপুজারীরা মুসলিম মহিলার উপর নির্যাতন করছে😥😭

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the viral video was misleading. The woman getting beaten was a drug peddler and the incident had no communal aspect. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

In the video, the people can be heard speaking in the Manipuri language. With the help of our Manipur Team, we got to know that they were asking the woman where she got the drugs and whom she was supposed to give. The lady was shouting, “o, Ema. Aibu Kanbiyu” which means, “Oh Mother please protect me”.

Moving forward, using relevant keywords, we came across a tweet from Manipur Police. Mentioning the video, Manipur Police said that the claim is fake. 

They tweeted, “#FAKE

Miscreants beat up a woman alleging to be involved in drug peddling.

Police have taken up a case in this regard.

There is no communal angle in it”.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim made with the viral video is misleading. The woman getting beaten in the video was a drug peddler and Manipur Police clarified that the incident has no communal aspect.
