McDonald’s Is Not Testing a $1 Surcharge for Drive-Thru Orders

Consumer Safety Fact Check False

A claim circulating widely on social media alleges that McDonald’s is testing a new $1 surcharge for customers who use the drive-thru in selected cities. Posts typically feature what appears to be an official notice stating that a “$1 convenience fee” will be added to all drive-thru orders in selected cities. However, our investigation found no evidence that McDonald’s is testing such a fee. The company has directly denied the claim, and the images used as evidence show signs of manipulation. We found the claim to be false.

Social Media Posts

The rumor spread through numerous social media posts that claimed McDonald’s was introducing a “$1 convenience fee” for customers using the drive-thru.

Fact Check

McDonald’s Says the Claim Is False

The most significant piece of evidence against the claim comes directly from McDonald’s.

According to multiple fact-check reports, McDonald’s press office responded to News10NBC reporters about the viral images and stated unequivocally that the claim was false. In an email response, a company representative reportedly said: “This is fake.”

The company further explained that reports of a drive-thru surcharge were completely untrue and suggested that the images circulating online were likely created using artificial intelligence or digitally manipulated.

In addition, News10NBC reporters visited several McDonald’s locations and found no signs advertising a drive-thru surcharge. The station reported that neither restaurant employees nor company representatives could verify the existence of any such fee.

No announcements regarding a $1 drive-thru surcharge appear on McDonald’s official website, investor communications, press releases, or restaurant policy updates. McDonald’s official drive-thru information describes the service as a convenient ordering option and makes no mention of any additional fee for using the drive-thru. Official information about McDonald’s drive-thru service can be found on the company website here.

The Viral Images Show Signs of Manipulation

The claim largely relies on photographs showing a supposed McDonald’s notice announcing a drive-thru surcharge. However, closer inspection of the images reveals several warning signs.

We analyzed the viral images using OpenAI’s image detection tools. The analysis identified the presence of SynthID markers, a digital watermarking technology used to identify AI-generated images.

While watermark detection alone does not prove how an image was distributed online, it provides strong evidence that the images were generated using AI tools rather than photographed from an actual McDonald’s location.

McDonald’s Is Changing Pricing Strategies, But Not Adding a Drive-Thru Fee

Some social media users speculated that the rumored fee might be linked to McDonald’s recent pricing changes. However, reports about the company’s 2026 pricing strategy refer to efforts to standardize menu pricing and improve value offerings across franchise locations. None of these reports mention a drive-thru convenience fee.

Industry reports also indicate that the company continues investing in technology aimed at improving drive-thru efficiency, including digital ordering systems, analytics tools, and automated technologies.

These initiatives are designed to streamline operations and improve customer experience, not to impose an additional fee for drive-thru usage. Recent reporting about McDonald’s operational changes contains no reference to a $1 drive-thru surcharge.

Similar McDonald’s Hoaxes Have Spread Before

This is not the first time fabricated McDonald’s content has gone viral. This is not the first time misleading content involving McDonald’s has gone viral online. Fact Crescendo has previously debunked several false and misleading claims involving the fast-food chain, which can be viewed here.

The current drive-thru fee rumor follows a similar pattern: a fabricated image is shared online, gains traction through social media engagement, and is later disproven through direct verification with the company.

Conclusion

The claim that McDonald’s is testing a $1 surcharge for drive-thru orders is false. McDonald’s has directly denied the rumor, describing it as fake. We also found strong evidence that the images used to support the claim were AI-generated or digitally manipulated. There is no evidence of such a fee at restaurant locations, and no official McDonald’s announcement supports the claim.
