Following the BJP’s victory in the recent West Bengal Assembly Elections, a video allegedly showing a large number of Muslim people crossing the Bangladesh border from West Bengal went viral on social media. Sharing the video, a user wrote, “On May 5, 2026, the India-Bangladesh border is witnessing a marked surge of return migration, with thousands of people, including a large number of Muslims, crossing back into Bangladesh from West Bengal. The movement is linked to deep anxiety following the BJP’s landslide victory in the state assembly elections and the new government’s pledge to finish a 127-km border fence and launch intense anti-infiltration drives. Many residents say they are returning voluntarily to avoid possible crackdowns and rigorous identity verification under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which has already excluded millions of voters, mostly from the Muslim community. At key points like Hakimpur, the BSF is coordinating with the Border Guard Bangladesh through flag meetings, allowing structured returns while both sides stay on high alert to prevent unauthorised crossings during this sensitive political and administrative shift.”

However, upon investigation, we discovered that the claim was false. The viral video is old and unrelated to the recent West Bengal Assembly Elections. Here’s the fact check.
Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a tweet on the official X handle of the West Bengal Police on November 25, 2025. The tweet contained a screenshot from the viral video. Earlier, the video went viral claiming that the illegal immigrants were leaving West Bengal after the implementation of the SIR.

The tweet read, “A video/pic of immersion of Idol/Image of goddess Shyama/Kali of Village-Phunkotala (located near Bangladesh Border), PS- Murutia, District -Nadia, West Bengal in Mathabhanga river is being circulated as illegal immigrants leaving the state en masse due to SIR. This is FAKE and FALSE.
Please do not share such fake video/ image and inciteful messages.

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to the recent West Bengal Assembly Elections.
Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show the Muslims leaving West Bengal after the BJP’s victory in the recent West Bengal Assembly Elections. This is an old video of the idol immersion of Goddess Kali at Phunkotala village near the Bangladesh border in Nadia district, West Bengal.
