Heinz Tomato Soup Has Shifted to BPA-Free Packaging Amid Safety Concerns.

Consumer Safety Fact Check False

Heinz Tomato Soup has recently come under scrutiny on social media after users have claimed that the soup’s can packaging contains Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is often linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns. The claim suggests that upon consuming Heinz Tomato Soup, BPA in the human body grows to an alarming level in a very short span of time.

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. Heinz had switched to safer alternative packaging rather than BPA cans years ago.

A relevant keyword search on Google led us to a tweet by Heinz UK & Ireland. The tweet reads, “Although UK & European food authorities have stated that minute levels of BPA in can coatings are safe,Heinz is at an advanced stage of completing the move to alternatives. Most of our cans have already switched to ones that avoid using BPA in the protective internal coatings.

In 2010, Forbes reported that after considering the concerns of the consumers, many large food companies took an initiative to stop using cans with the presence of BPA. Among these companies, H.J. Heinz received appreciation for taking early action to reduce BPA in its packaging and for actively working on safer alternatives.

This shows that Heinz had started replacing BPA can linings years ago.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in food packaging materials, especially the protective inner lining of metal cans to stop food from touching the metal directly. Due to this, there is a possibility of a very tiny amount of BPA migrating into food. However, after reviewing scientific studies, the FDA found that the level of BPA found in canned food is very low and the food is safe for human consumption.

The FDA also stated that some industries have voluntarily moved away from BPA in products such as baby bottles, infant formula packaging, and many canned foods as alternative materials became available.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. Heinz had switched to safer alternative packaging rather than BPA cans years ago.
