2021 Iran earthquake video falsely shared as tremors after Iran’s recent nuclear test

The conflict between Iran and Israel entered its 21st day today, with both sides intensifying military operations. Iran has vowed revenge after Israeli airstrikes killed senior security official Ali Larijani and Basij paramilitary commander Gholamreza Soleimani. Against this backdrop, a video showing parked trucks shaking violently and clouds of dust rising is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows tremors caused by a recent nuclear test in the country.

Fact check:

We began our investigation with a reverse image search on Google, and the results led us to a similar video on YouTube by TRT World on 14 November, 2021. The caption of the video states, “Footage shows the moment a powerful earthquake struck southern Iran, near the port of Bandar Abbas. The quake measured a magnitude of 6.5 by European Mediterranean Seismological Centre and prompted residents to flee their homes.”

Using these hints, we conducted further searches and found several news reports regarding the earthquake of 2021. A powerful earthquake struck southern Iran, near the port of Bandar Abbas, resulting in one fatality. Two tremors, measuring 6.4 and 6.3 in magnitude, occurred just one minute apart in an area near the island of Qeshm, close to Bandar Abbas.

We also came across reports published by CNN,  and Newsflare in November 2021 mentioning that the video shows an earthquake from Iran. The United States Geological Survey confirmed that it was of magnitude 6.3 with a depth of 10 kilometers. 

So, taking account of all this evidence, we can understand that an old video of Iran Earthquake falsely shared as recent nuclear testing tremors

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo found that the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The video does not show any recent nuclear tests or earthquakes in Iran. The video dates back to 2021 showing an earthquake in Iran.
