Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, visited a relief camp in Manipur on 8 July for people displaced by the ethnic violence in the northeastern state. This was his third visit to the northeastern state since ethnic unrest and violence struck Manipur in May 2023. He interacted with internally displaced people of both the sides, the Meiti as well as the Kuki-Zo tribal community.
Meanwhile, a viral video of Rahul Gandhi is circulating on social media, claiming that he returned after 'go back' slogans were widely shouted by Manipur people concerned that his inflammatory speeches can trigger new clashes in the state.
The caption of the post states that, “Rahul Gandhi has been asked to go back in Manipur by residents, as his inflammatory speeches would trigger in to new clashes. This was Yesterday 8/7/24, so he had to return”.
Let’s check the truth

We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a NDTV report featuring the screenshot of the viral video. The report captioned as “Crowd Raises Slogans Against Rahul Gandhi Outside Eatery In Assam” and it was published on 22 January 2024. As per the report, this incident took place at a roadside eatery in Assam’s Nagaon on 21January. At the time, the crowd raised slogans against Rahul Gandhi and displayed placards with slogans such as “Anyay Yatra” and “Rakibul go back”, referring to Rakibul Hussain, the Congress MP from Assam’s Dhubri constituency and former MLA from Nagaon’s Samaguri seat.
Upon further search, we found a longer version of the viral video, shared by the news agency ANI, on 21 January. The post mentioned that this video was from a protest against Rahul Gandhi in the Ambagan area of Assam's Nagaon. The caption reads, “A large number of people carrying posters of 'Rahul Gandhi go back' and 'Anyaya Yatra' held a protest against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Ambagan area of Nagaon this evening”.
Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra reached Assam on 18 January and on January 21, he and other leaders stopped at a restaurant in Ambagan on their way to their overnight stay in Rupohi. Here, he was mobbed by a crowd raising slogans against him. The leaders were escorted out of the eatery by the security personnel
The same news was reported by many credible news outlets, such as ABP, Jagran English, and Aaj Tak.
Taking account of these evidences, we can understand that an old video of Assam’s Nagaon people protesting against Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has been falsely shared and linked to his recent visit to Manipur.
