Did this man chop his finger because he voted for Congress? Know the truth.
Assembly elections of Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan had been scheduled by the Election Commission of India. Campaigns and rallies for the elections had already started.
Against this backdrop, many posts and videos are going viral on social media. In one such video, a man can be seen chopping his own finger in front of a camera. Social media users are claiming that this video is from Tamil Nadu where a person chopped his finger because he casted his vote for Congress.
However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an incident from Maharashtra where this person chopped his finger after failing to get justice for the murder of his relatives.
Fact Check-
We found that the man in the video is speaking in Marathi language. We contacted Fact Crescendo Marathi team to help us in translating it. We found that the man in the video is saying, “I am giving a part of my body as a gift to the Modi government. Every week I am going to send a part of my body to the Modi government”
This raised our suspicion whether the video is really from Tamil Nadu and related to the elections.
A relevant keyword search on Google led us to the same video uploaded on DV News India’s YouTube Channel on 19 August 2023. According to the report, the brother and sister-in-law of the man seen in the video had committed suicide after being forced by few people. This incident took place in Ulhasnagar in Thane district of Maharashtra. The man accused the police for not taking proper legal actions against the accused and in protest he chopped his finger.
According to The Free Press Journal report on 19 August 2023, the name of the person in the video is Dhananjay Nanavare. Due to negligence of police in investigating the suicide case of his brother and sister-in-law, he chopped his finger in front of the camera. Both the deceased jumped from their residential house due to unknown pressure on them.
According to Amar Ujala report, police detained four people who provoked the couple to commit suicide. Police arrested Kamlesh Nikam, Naresh Gaikwad, Ganpati Kamble and Sashikant Sathe after Dhananjay Nanavare (brother of the deceased) cut his finger in front of the camera. According to Dhananjay, one minister was also involved in this matter and his brother had told the name of the minister before committing suicide. He chopped his finger due to delay in justice and threatened to cut one of his body parts each week and send it to the government until he gets justice.
To confirm about the incident, Fact Crescendo contacted Phaltan Gramin Police Station and spoke to P.I Manik. He informed us, “This matter comes under Thane Police. Dhananjay had cut his finger here in Phaltan. The claim that he had voted for BJP and did not want to vote again is wrong. His brother and sister-in-law had committed suicide and he was not happy with the action being taken in that case. So he cut his finger in protest.”
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The brother and sister-in-law of the person seen in the video had committed suicide after some people pressurized them. This person claimed that the police had not taken proper action in this matter because of which he had chopped his finger.
