
Recently, a video of a few shops being swept away in floods went viral on social media. Sharing the video, users claimed that the viral video shows a recent flood situation in Guwahati, Assam.
However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The viral video is old and unrelated to Assam. Here’s the fact check.
Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a report published on a website on 18 July 2023 which contained an image similar to the screenshots from the viral video. The report indicates that the image is from Himachal Pradesh.

Moving forward, we found the viral video on a YouTube channel uploaded on 17 July 2023.
Another YouTube video claimed that the video is from the Sainj Valley, Himachal Pradesh floods on 9 July 2023.
We found an Instagram post where the viral video was uploaded on 8 September 2024 and according to the caption, the video is from Sainj Valley, Himachal Pradesh floods on 9 July 2023.
According to reports, “Floods caused by heavy rains had wreaked havoc in Sainj in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district. 40 shops and 30 houses had been destroyed due to the floods. The incident happened on 9 July 2023 afternoon when floodwater from the river entered the Sainj market.”

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to Assam.
Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show the flood situation in Guwahati, Assam. The video is old and from Himachal Pradesh.
