A 24-year-old student from Gujarat, preparing for NEET, allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota last day. Kota city of Rajasthan is considered a coaching center for IIT entrance exams. Also, many students here commit suicide due to study stress.
In this backdrop, an image of a girl is going viral on social media. Which is being shared with the claim that, “This girl’s name is Kriti and she has stated in her suicide note that the coaching institute is responsible for her suicide and has requested to close it as soon as possible.”
The same post is going viral on Facebook as well.
Fact Check-
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google, whose results led us to a similar image shared by an Instagram account named ‘@tissa_vaasi.06’ on 14 December, 2024. It turned out that this photograph belongs to a social media influencer named Jyoti Thakur .
After the picture went viral with misleading claims, Jyoti Thakur clarified that she is the girl in the viral image, “I did not commit suicide, and I am now safe. I do not study in Kota. This news is going viral with false claims.
Kriti commits suicide in Kota
According to Hindustan Times , a 17-year-old student named Kriti Tripathi committed suicide by jumping from a five-story building in Kota on April 28, 2016. The suicide note read, “The Government of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) should close the coaching institutes as soon as possible as they are exploiting students.” You can read the full news here. Now, at the beginning of the new year, on 7 January, 19-year-old Neeraj, who was preparing for the IIT JEE entrance exam, first committed suicide. The next day, 20-year-old Abhishek, who was appearing for the JEE exam, was found dead. On 16 January, the body of an 18-year-old was also found. Then, four days before his JEE exam, another 18-year-old committed suicide. Last year, 17 students committed suicide in Kota, not including cases of school students. This was a 38 percent decrease compared to 2023, in which 23 cases were reported. You can read more information here and here.
Based on these evidences, we can understand that the girl seen in the viral image is not Kriti, but social media influencer Jyoti Thakur. In 2016, a student named Kriti Tripathi committed suicide and in a suicide note, she requested the coaching institute to be closed. This image is going viral with a misleading claim.
