Old Unrelated Videos Shared As The Recent 7.6-Magnitude Earthquake In Japan.

False International

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on December 8, 2025. Against this backdrop, a video containing several earthquake visuals went viral on social media. Sharing the video, users claimed that the clips are from the recent earthquake in Japan.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. The clips are old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Japan. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search.

First Clip

A reverse image search of the screenshots from the first clip led us to a YouTube channel where the video was uploaded on January 23, 2025. 

According to the description, the video is from the Japan Earthquake on January 1, 2024.

A similar video can be seen here.

This makes it clear that the video is old.

Second Clip

A reverse image search of the second clip led us to an Instagram handle where the viral video was uploaded on 6 April 2024.

According to the caption, the video shows an earthquake in Taipei, Taiwan in 2024.

For further clarification, we contacted the person who posted it, and he confirmed to us that he captured the video and it was taken in Taipei, Taiwan, in April, 2024. He tagged the DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan as the location in the Instagram post.

This makes it clear that the clip is not from the recent earthquake in Japan.

Third Clip 

A reverse image search of the screenshots from the third clip led us to an Instagram Handle where the viral video was uploaded on 28 March 2025. According to the caption, the video is from the earthquake in Thailand on 28 March 2025.

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Japan.

Fourth Clip

A reverse image search of the fourth Clip led us to a report published in The Guardian according to which the video is from the Myanmar- earthquake in March 2025.

This makes it clear that the video is not from the recent earthquake in Japan.

Fifth Clip

A reverse image search of the fifth clip led us to posts that were shared in March 2025. According to these posts, the video is from the Thailand Earthquake in March 2025.

Sixth Clip

A reverse image search of the sixth clip led us to a Facebook profile where the video was uploaded on 1 April, 2025 according to which the video is from the Myanmar Earthquake in March 2025.

We found a report published on April 1, 2025, that contained an image similar to the screenshots from the sixth clip. According to the report, the video is from the Myanmar Earthquake in March 2025.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show the recent earthquake in Japan. The clips in the video are old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Japan.
