Old Tsunami video from Greenland goes viral as recent from Russia

False International

This is an old video from Greenland and it dates back to 2017.

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, triggering a Pacific Ocean tsunami warning. Destructive tsunami waves could reach areas along the coasts of Russia and Japan in the next three hours, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The first waves triggered by the earthquake off Russia’s coast have reached Hawaii, with a 4ft (1.2m) wave recorded off Oahu. People in Hawaii, some parts of the US west coast and Japan have been told to evacuate after the earthquake.

Amidst this, a video that shows waves in a beach area has gone viral on social media shared claiming to be of a tsunami after a recent earthquake in Russia.

Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation with a reverse image search of key frames from the viral video, which led us to a similar video on YouTube uploaded by Newsflare under the caption “Fishermen Make A Lucky Escape As Tsunami Hits In Greenland”. The description part states, “Shocking moment caught on camera when fishermen got surprised by the incredible power of a tsunami wave which hit Greenland’s west coast. Luckily all three were able to escape the wave just in time”.

This confirms that the video is not recent and not related to Russia.

As per reports, “Three fishermen ran for their lives as a substantial tsunami slammed into the tiny fishing village of Nuugaatsiaq, Greenland back in 2017. It was created by a landslide in a fjord almost 20 miles away. The tsunami recorded peak wave heights of 300′, and reached the town with a wave as high as 30”.

On 17 June 2017, a huge tsunami occurred in the Karrat Fjord on the west coast of Greenland, resulting in severe property damage and casualties in the tiny fishing village of Nuugaatsiaq. The seismic energy detected prior to the tsunami was so large it was first thought to have been the result of a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. However, the cause was a massive landslide on a steep slope of the fjord where millions of cubic meters of rock plunged into the water below, 32 kilometers northeast of the village. Forty-five structures, including eleven houses, were washed away or destroyed, and four people were killed.

Taking account of all these evidences we can understand that this video is from Greenland after a landslide in a fjord in June 2017.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This is an old video from Greenland and it dates back to 2017. It has no connection to the recent earthquake in Russia.
