Israel is bracing itself for another Iranian attack after a crescendo of threatening rhetoric from leaders in Iran saying the country would retaliate for Israeli missile strikes last month. On the evening of October 5, 2024, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Iran, centered in Aradan, Semnan province. Following the tremor, a weaker aftershock was reported in Israel, igniting online debates about a possible nuclear test.
Amidst this, a video showing parked trucks on the road shaking violently is circulating on social media claiming that it shows a nuclear test tremor in Iran.
The caption of the post states, ‘Earthquakes in Iran as trucks shake on the side of the road and dust rises from the mountains. Nuke tests? Iran’s nuclear test,,,Great Iran,,, The explosion was so big that the earth started shaking, you should also see
Fact Check–
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google on one of the keyframes and the results led us to a YouTube short uploaded on 14 November 2021 with the caption ‘Footage shows the moment a powerful earthquake struck southern Iran, near the port of Bandar Abbas. The quake measured a magnitude of 6.5 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, and prompted residents to flee their homes.’ This video was posted by TRT World.
We also came across reports published by CNN, Al Jazeera and Newsflare published in November 2021 mentioning that the video shows an earthquake from Iran. The United States Geological Survey confirmed that it was of magnitude 6.3 with a depth of 10 kilometers.
What happened in Iran recently?
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Garmsar, located in Semnan Province, eastern Tehran, at 5:16 am local time, originating from a depth of 11 kilometers on 3rd November 2024. The quake resulted in significant damage, leading to power and internet outages in many homes. Reza Khani, the Governor of Garmsar, confirmed that emergency response teams are on standby and urged residents to remain calm and follow safety measures.
