Christian religious procession of Manila falsely shared as protest of Hindus in Bangladesh

This video is from a Christian religious procession held in Philippines, Manila. It has no link to Bangladesh.

Amid the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, various videos are going viral on social media. Amidst this we have noticed a video of a crowd gathered outside a building that looks like a religious place. The users who shared the video claims that the people in this crowd are Hindus from Bangladesh, who are unitedly protesting against the atrocities being committed against them.

Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a similar video uploaded on an Instagram post, dated 19 April, 2024. The description in the Spanish language states

“Dangerous devotion: Overwhelming crowd seeks to enter this church in the Philippines”. This indicates that the viral video is not recent.

Using these hints, searching further, we came across a YouTube video uploaded on the official channel of the Philippines’ leading media outlet Manila Bulletin on 9 January, 2024. According to the report, it shows a religious event called the ‘Black Nazarene’ procession. Here the incident is said to be from Quiapo Church in Manila. We can see the visuals of the viral video at the timestamp of 19:52 here.

The Black Nazarene is a life-sized, dark-coloured statue of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, which is enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Manila, Philippines. The statue is believed by many Filipino Catholics to have miraculous healing powers. Every year on January 9, the statue is carried in a procession from the church of St. Nicola da Tolentino to the Quiapo parish. The procession is one of the biggest displays of Catholic religious devotion in the Philippines and draws millions of devotees.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this procession was not being taken out for the last three years. This is the reason why about 60 lakh people participated in it on 9 January this year.

So, it is clear that the viral video shows a procession in Philippines, not a protest by Hindus in Bangladesh.
