Let’s understand the modus operandi of the scammers. First, you will receive a message via SMS, WhatsApp, or Telegram with a job offer stating that you can write and post reviews on Amazon for different products available on the platform and earn attractive income by utilizing the leisure time of your day. They will convince you that it is a very easy, work-from-home job requiring only a smartphone and 2-3 hours every day. If you respond to the message, they will share a link with you through which you can submit the review. After posting a review, a small amount will be paid as a reward. Then you will be provided with more links to review like this after receiving the first payment. This is the method of tasking and payment. Gradually, the payment will increase along with the tasks.

However, upon investigation, we found out that this is pure fraud and that fraud gangs are behind it to steal your money smartly.

Fact Findings

You will receive payment right away from the scammers as you are their prey. This promise is the biggest trap if you trust them, and the reward is meant to be a snare. After a few episodes of accurate tasking and payment drama, you will be asked for a small deposit for further tasks and payments. By this time, as you already trust the company fully, you will be ready to pay the deposit without second thoughts. After depositing the required amount, you will receive the payment without a single rupee pending or reduced from the confirmed payment as they offered.

Once a few tasks are completed, the deposit amount will increase conditionally, and you will gradually be forced to deposit more money for more profits. Then the fraudsters will demand amounts that are beyond your means. They will persuade you to invest this amount to receive your reward, and you may have no other choice but to obey their words. In the final scene of the play, your messages will no longer be responded to once they have taken their intended amount. By the time you realize you have been scammed, you may have lost a significant amount.

How to spot the scam?

Redirect buttons are a common method used by scammers to take you to their scam website. The mentioned website may have no connection to the original Amazon site. Scammers may provide you with the original Amazon link to leave a review for credibility purposes, but the Amazon site is not accessible to them for any payment activities. So they will provide you with other fake links. Likewise, the Amazon e-commerce site is authentic and trustworthy, and their payment methods will be directly to customers if they are paying for any reviews. However, reviews are not compensated by Amazon in fact. Amazon’s official website has several articles (archived link) that warn people to be vigilant against fake review brokers

“We are fighting hard against review brokers. We will keep taking legal action to permanently close down fraudsters who are responsible for facilitating these reviews. Last year, Amazon took legal action against more than 90 fakers around the world who made money by posting fake reviews, and we sued more than 10,000 Facebook group administrators who tried to post fake reviews on our stores in exchange for money or free products. Legal proceedings had been initiated against 94 counterfeiters, including those from the US, China, and Europe, by May 2023. Leading consumer protection organizations partner with us in Europe to identify and prosecute the most serious offenders. Our legal actions across the world are starting to yield results as we have shut down some global brokers.” – one of the articles explain…

“For buying products from Amazon, consumers depend on customer reviews to make decisions. The fraudsters must be held accountable for intentionally misleading Amazon customers, harming our sales partners, and abusing our store. Amazon Selling Partner Trust & Store Director Claire O’Donnell comments on the article. “We will continue to pursue fake review brokers (archived link) to maintain a comprehensive and reliable shopping experience,” he added.

The cyber police of various states warn the public about such online job scams from time to time. A senior police officer from cyber cell Kerala Police, says “We are receiving complaints on a daily basis from victims who have lost their money. We have registered cases and arrested more than 10 accused so far who were operating from various places, including other states. The victims are often lured by WhatsApp and Telegram messages offering online part-time jobs. Initially, the victims receive money ranging from ₹200 to ₹1000 for completing the tasks.”

Conclusion

Our investigation reveals that none of the customer review jobs are offered by Amazon. Moreover, Amazon is not obligated to pay for any customer reviews you provide. This is a fraudulent scheme by scammers using the name of Amazon. Be cautious when responding to online review job postings claiming to be from Amazon. If you identify yourself as a victim, seek help from the police as soon as possible.
