Image from 2016 showing a Chilean Military personnel kneeling on a man has been falsely shared as Israeli soldier killing a Palestinian child.

A few days back, Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel and killed citizens and army personnel. In response to this, Israel struck back the Gaza strip with rockets that destroyed many infrastructures in the region.

Against this backdrop, an image showing a soldier bending his knees on a man’s neck while the victim can be seen bleeding from their nose is widely circulating on social media with the claim that it shows an Israeli soldier killing a Palestinian child.

The caption of the image states, “An #Israeli soldier kills a #Palestinian child, and he sits on him proudly. Look, world!”

Facebook Post

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a Google reverse image search, whose result us to the same image posted by a Facebook page on 30 May 2020 mentioning that the image is from Chile.

Keeping this in mind, we found another Facebook post published by news website El Dinamo on 2 October 2016 mentioning that “The F Sublieutenant Venegas stopped the victim for an alleged scratching he had been doing on the public road, with rather unusual methods.” The post accompanied a website link that mentioned that this incident took place in Valparaíso in Chile.

We noticed that the officer is wearing a tag named “F Venegas V”. A keyword search led us to a news article by a Chilean radio station named ‘ADN Radio’ published on October 2016. The article states that the man in the image is Second Lieutenant F Venegas who kneeled on a man’s neck while arresting him in Chile. The name is the victim is mentioned as Diego. The article mentioned that the image was first shared on a Facebook Page.

We search for the mentioned Facebook Page named ‘Frente Fotografico’ who are a Chilean photography collection page. They upload the image on 3rd October 2016.

According to a Chilean website, El Mostrador published in October 2016 translates to “In the images, published by the Frente Fotoográfico site, you can see how Second Lieutenant F. Venegas holds a young man who was scratching a wall in Valparaíso to the ground. The subject is bleeding from the mouth and nose while the victim's friends implore his release.”

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the image to be False. The image dates back to October 2016 showing a Chilean Second Lieutenant torturing a victim to arrest him. The image has been falsely shared with the claim that it shows an Israeli soldier killing a Palestinian child.
