The BJP has secured a majority in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. However, reports of violence are emerging from the state. In this context, a video showing a house on fire is going viral on social media. Users who share the post claim that BJP workers set fire to the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee after the results of the elections were declared.
Let’s check the truth.
Fact check:
We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google, and the results led us to a News18 report published in January 2026 that carried visuals of a house on fire. The report stated that the incident took place in Bangladesh, where the house of a Hindu teacher, Birender Kumar Dey, in Sylhet was engulfed in flames amid concerns over minority safety.
This indicates that the viral video is from Bangladesh and unrelated to the West Bengal assembly election.

Moving forward, we found several news reports regarding this incident. As per a report published on the ANI website on 16 January 2026, “A fire broke out at the home of Bikash Ranjan Deb in Gowaighat, Sylhet district, eastern Bangladesh. Police Sub-Inspector Didar said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Bikash told police he believed the incident was purely an accident caused by the short circuit.”
There are no credible reports to support the claim that the TMC leader’s house was on fire. An old and unrelated video from Bangladesh is falsely shared as Mamata Banerjee’s house was set on fire after the results of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections were declared.
Conclusion
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the video to be Misleading. This is an old video from Bangladesh, and it shows a Hindu teacher’s house on fire in January 2026.
