A video of idol immersion of Goddess Kali in West Bengal falsely shared as illegal immigrants fleeing from West Bengal after the launch of SIR

False National

This video shows the idol immersion of Goddess Kali at Funkatala village (Shikarpur) in Nadia district, West Bengal. The footage has nothing to do with the SIR action.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a process by the Election Commission of India that involves a comprehensive review of voter rolls, including a detailed check at the local level to ensure the accuracy of the lists. The primary objective of this process is to prepare a voters’ roll that is free from errors. It is a list that ensures that every eligible citizen has his/her name correctly recorded and that no ineligible or multiple entries of the same name are made.

Following the announcement of SIR in West Bengal, many illegal Bangladeshi migrants were arrested trying to cross the border out of India. Against this backdrop, a video purporting to show Bangladeshis crossing the border from West Bengal while the SIR process is in progress is currently circulating on social media.

Let’s check the truth

Fact Check-

We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google with the key frames of the video and the results led us to a Facebook post with similar footage. It was uploaded on 30 October, 2025. In the video, she can be heard saying that she has come to Shikarpur to watch an immersion. Shikarpur is a village under the Murutia police station area in the Karimpur II CD block of Nadia district, West Bengal.

Another video by the same Facebook user  is also available.

The SIR process began in West Bengal on 4 November but the video circulating is of a celebration that took place on October 30. The video has no connection with the SIR process.

The West Bengal Police has issued a statement through Twitter saying that the viral video is not related to the SIR process. The post states, “A video/pic of immersion of Idol/Image of goddess Shyama/Kali of Village-Phunkotala (located near Bangladesh Border), PS- Murutia, District -Nadia, West Bengal in Mathabhanga river is being circulated as illegal immigrants leaving the state en masse due to SIR. This is FAKE and FALSE”.

There are reports that many migrants are retreating from West Bengal. Many illegal migrants who entered India years ago and obtained Aadhaar and voter ID cards are now attempting to return to Bangladesh amid the SIR operation. Since July, between 200 and 300 individuals have been crossing the border each day to return to Bangladesh. This exodus appears to have intensified with the commencement of the electoral roll revision.

Taking account of above evidences, it is clear that a video of Kali idol immersion in West Bengal is being shared as showing illegal Bangladeshis leaving after the SIR announcement.

Conclusion-

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This video shows the Kali idol immersion at Funkatala village (Shikarpur) in Nadia district, West Bengal.
