A video of Indane XTRATEJ LPG cylinders falsely shared as cow dung cylinders developed in Uttarakhand

Misleading National

The Iran-US-Israeli war has resulted in a temporary shortage of LPG cylinders in India. Against this backdrop, a video of two people loading a truck full of purple cylinders has gone viral on social media. The users who share the post claim that two brothers in Uttarakhand have developed an eco-friendly gobar gas cylinder that offers 18 kg of gas for ₹500. Gobar gas is a renewable energy source produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic waste, primarily cow dung.

The caption of the post states, “Two brothers from Uttarakhand have created a natural gas cylinder from cow dung, giving 18 kg gas for just Rs 500 – simple, affordable, and eco-friendly.”

 Let’s check the truth.

Fact check:

Initially, we looked for news reports about commercial biogas cylinders created by two brothers from Uttarakhand; however, we were unable to find any credible information regarding this.

Next, we conducted a keyword search for purple gas cylinders, which led us to a news report by Aaj Tak about these cylinders. The article featured an image of the purple cylinders and noted that they are the “Indane Xtra Tej” cylinders from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), designed for commercial use and weighing 19 kg.

We checked the Indian Oil’s website, which featured this cylinder in its catalogue of LPG cylinders. XTRATEJ, which supposedly reduces cooking time by fourteen percent, was developed for industrial and commercial purposes only and not sold for domestic use.

Taking account of this evidence, we can clearly say that the viral video shows men loading Indane’s XTRATEJ cylinders into a truck, not cow dung gas cylinders developed by two brothers from Uttarakhand.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The cylinders shown in the video are Indane XTRATEJ, which is a commercial LPG product manufactured by the Indian Oil Corporation.
