Sharing the video on Instagram, a user wrote, “Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was seen participating in an anti-encroachment drive in Guwahati, where visuals from the site quickly gained attention online. Standing atop a bulldozer near a mosque, he appeared to interact with the crowd, smiling and waving as people gathered around the operation.

In the footage, flower petals were showered as the Chief Minister acknowledged those present, while officials and locals recorded the moment on their phones. The scene, marked by visible political symbolism, has drawn mixed reactions, with critics questioning the optics and supporters defending the government’s firm stance on clearing encroachments.”

However, upon investigation, we discovered that the claim was misleading. The viral video is not from an anti-encroachment drive. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to the official Facebook page of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma where the viral video was uploaded on March 27, 2026.

The video shows a man showering flower petals on the CM, with people standing on the balcony of the building behind him. The hashtag used in the caption was “#AssamElections2026”.

We found another post on the Facebook page of Himanta Biswa Sarma that contained several photos from the Assam Elections 2026 rally in Lakhimpur, Assam, on March 27, 2026. Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka can be seen with Himanta Biswa Sarma in these photos, as well as the viral video.

In the viral video, we noticed a shop name “AHSAN HARDWARE”.

Taking this clue, we conducted a relevant keyword search and learned that it’s located in North Lakhimpur, Assam. We geolocated the place, which can be seen below.

This makes it clear that the viral video is from Himanta Biswa Sarma’s election rally in Lakhimpur.

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show an anti-encroachment drive in Guwahati. The video shows Himanta Biswa Sarma participating in an election rally in Lakhimpur on March 27, 2026, for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections, 2026.
