However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. The viral video predates Ayatollah Khomeini’s death. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a report published in Times Now Hindi on September 26, 2025, which contained an image similar to the screenshots from the viral video.

The translation of the report read, “Following Friday prayers in Bareilly, members of the Muslim community took to the streets over the “I Love Mohammad” controversy, leading to some violent incidents. Tensions flared in Bareilly after Friday prayers, prompting police to resort to a lathi charge. Additional forces were deployed to control the situation. Bareilly police have detained some individuals in connection with this incident and are questioning them. Sources indicate that an FIR may also be filed against Tauqeer Raza. Hundreds of worshippers began protesting outside a mosque near the Biharipur police post in the Kotwali police station area of Bareilly. They took to the streets, chanting slogans like “I love Mohammad” and “Nara-e-Taqdeer” and waving banners. The crowd pressure became so intense that the police resorted to a lathi charge. Speaking to reporters at the scene, DIG Ajay Sahni said, “Legal action is being ensured by filing a case against the accused.” He clarified that no leniency would be shown in maintaining law and order. Sahni stated that strict security arrangements would be made in all four districts of the Bareilly Range: Bareilly, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, and Pilibhit…”

Taking this clue, we conducted a relevant keyword search. This led us to a report on the YouTube channel NEWS9 Live on September 26, 2025. We noticed footage similar to the viral video in this report.

The description of the video read, “Violence broke out in Bareilly following ‘I Love Mohammad’ protests. Multiple areas saw stone-pelting, prompting police and reinforcements to resort to lathi charge to restore order.”

The “I Love Muhammad” Controversy:

According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, “The ‘I Love Muhammed’ controversy dates back to September 9, when the Kanpur police filed an FIR against nine named and 15 unidentified persons for allegedly displaying boards of ‘I Love Muhammed’ slogans on a public road during a Barawafat procession on September 4. Several Hindu organisations objected to the move and termed it a “new trend”, alleging that this was a deliberate provocation.

The row further escalated after AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi asserted that saying ‘I Love Muhammed’ was not a crime, asking why such expressions of faith should be seen as provocative.”

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to Ayatollah Khomeini’s death.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show the UP police beating the supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini recently. This is an old video from Bareilly related to the “I Love Muhammad” controversy in September 2025.
