A video of a girl’s body being recovered from water is going viral on social media with the claim that a Muslim man named Mohammad Akram raped and murdered his brother’s nine-year-old daughter and threw her body into the water. The caption of the post states, “Mohammad Akram raped his own brother’s nine-year-old daughter & then throwed her into the river”.

We started our investigation with keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to an X post carrying the same video Shared by journalist Shahnawaz, the post in Hindi states that, “Deoria police have arrested the accused uncle Vidya Sagar, who raped and then murdered his innocent 7-year-old niece. The child’s body has been recovered from the pond”.

Using the information we received, we conducted further research and discovered a post on X that identified the culprit. The post indicated that the incident occurred in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, and involved a suspect named Vidyasagar. The post detailed how the suspect allegedly lured his seven-year-old niece from school, assaulted her in a field, strangled her to death, and disposed of her body in a river to hide the crime.

Moving forward, we found several media reports regarding this incident.

One report by Dainik Bhaskar states that the horrific act took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria on 11 February, after a 35-year-old man, Vidya Sagar, took his seven-year-old niece to a field in the village and sexually assaulted her before strangling her. Following her disappearance from school and home, locals and her family were questioned. Vidya Sagar was apprehended after her body and bloodied clothes were discovered in and near the Jharahi River, along with his bicycle.

Apart from this, when the video gained traction on social media Deoria Police clarified through its official X handle that the accused is Vidya Sagar Yadav, not Mohammad Akram.

For further confirmation, we contacted Shrirampur police station in-charge Vinod Kumar Singh and he clarified that the accused is not Muslim. He belongs to the Hindu community and is the victim’s uncle. His name is Vidyasagar Yadav. There is no communal angle in the case and no person named Mohammad Akram was involved in the crime. 

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found that the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The person accused of raping and murdering his niece in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, is Vidyasagar Yadav, not Mohammad Akram.
