Consumers have raised concern about the ingredients used in Kinder Bueno chocolate bars. Some social media users are claiming that the use of these ingredients leads to hormonal issues and the product should be avoided.

Rapeseed Oil: We looked at the ingredients used in Kinder Bueno made in both the US and the UK. In both the regions rapeseed oil is not used in the product. Further, we found that

Palm Oil: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had found that during high temperature refining of palm oils two contaminants 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters can form. These substances are considered harmful to the kidney and have potential link cancer. The FDA is actively researching these contaminants to better understand their occurrence in foods and to develop methods for reducing their levels during oil processing. Palm oil is approved for use in food. The FDA recommended the manufacturers to minimize the presence of these contaminants to ensure safety of the consumers.

Soy Lecithin: Lecithin is a naturally occurring mixture of the phosphatides of choline, ethanolamine, and inositol, with smaller amounts of other lipids. It is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) under FDA regulation. According to this regulation, lecithin can be used in food with no limitations other than adhering to the current good manufacturing practices.

The EFSA re-evaluated lechitins (E 322) and concluded that it is safe for consumption. Further, it stated that Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) value is not required for lechitins as exposure levels from food consumption do not pose a safety concern for the general population, including infants and young children.

Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate: Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate or sodium bicarbonate has been recognized as a safe substance to be used in food by the FDA and it appears in the list of direct food additives of the Code of Federal Regulations. When sodium hydrogen carbonate is added to the food or used in equipment that contacts food, the FDA considers it ‘Generally Recognized as Safe’ (GRAS)

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. Kinder Bueno is safe to consume. It does not contain Rapeseed oil and MSG as claimed. Other ingredients like palm oil, soy lecithin and sodium hydrogen carbonate are considered safe by the regulatory bodies.
