Video of a water pipe burst in Assam falsely shared as a cloudburst in Kolkata 

The viral video shows water gushing out from a burst pipe in Guwahati’s Chandmari area in Assam, and not Kolkata.

On 23 September 2025, an intense rainfall occurred in Kolkata, causing widespread waterlogging and flash floods around the city. At least 10 people have died after Kolkata city saw its heaviest rainfall in 39 years. Nine of the deaths were caused by electrocution in stagnant water.

Against this backdrop, a video showing water gushing near a railway line has gone viral on social media with the claim that it shows the aftermath of a cloudburst in Kolkata.

Fact Check

A reverse image search on Google led us to a similar video uploaded by a Facebook page called ‘ Secular INDIA News’ and the description part states that “Water pipe bursts at Chandmari amid mourning for Zubeen Garg. A major water pipe burst in Chandmari, Guwahati, causing chaos as the city mourns Zubeen Garg. The burst sent water shooting up to 70-80 feet, flooding roads and disrupting traffic; authorities are urged to take swift action”.

This indicates that the video is from Assam and it predates the Kolkata rain.

Using these hints, we conducted further searches and found news reports regarding this incident. The official Twitter handle of NENewsTV also uploaded a similar video on 20 September, 2025, reporting it as a water pipe burst in the Chandmari area of Guwahati, Assam. Another report states, water gushed out at high speed and pressure that reached almost 70-80 km high when a pipe burst at Chandmari, Guwahati.

Amid the mourning of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, a major water pipe burst in Chandmari, Guwahati, causing significant chaos in the area.

Local media outlets Pratidin Times also reported the same incident as the
water from the Chandmari pipe burst on 20 September 2025 reached the rooftops of three- to four-story buildings near the Chandmari flyover in Guwahati.

So, taking account of all these evidences, we can understand that a video of a water pipe burst in Guwahati is being falsely shared as a cloudburst in Kolkata.
