Ukrainian security officials reported a drone attack destroying over 40 Russian planes in Russia’s territory, while Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Ukraine before a new round of direct talks in Istanbul. Against this backdrop, a video showing intense bombings and multiple explosions is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows a recent Russian assault on Ukraine.
Let’s check the truth
Fact Check-
We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a Twitter post uploaded on 9 July 2024 containing the viral video. This indicates that the video is not recent and does not depict a recent Russian attack. The post states that it was a Russian cruise missile attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
Moving forward, we also found a Daily Mail video report uploaded to YouTube on 9 July, 2024, which featured the viral video. The description of the video states, “This is the moment a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile hit a children’s hospital in Kyiv. Video shows the missile falling on to the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital on July 8. The hospital was already smoking, suggesting this was the second bomb to hit it. At least two people died in the strike, which wounded scores more”.
This confirms that this footage is not recent and has been available online since at least July 2024.
We found some reports from that time regarding this incident. According to an Associated Press report of 9 July 2024, Russia conducted a massive missile attack, targeting five Ukrainian cities and damaging the country’s largest children’s hospital, Okhmatdyt.
Thus, taking account of all these evidences, we can understand that this is an old video and it has no link to the recent Russian assault on Ukraine.
