Viral image of child trapped under the rubble is not related to Myanmar Earthquake

The viral image is from Syria and features a child peeking through a hole in a house wall, not trapped in rubble in Myanmar earthquake.

On 28 March 2025 a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar, with an epicenter close to Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912 reportedly killing more than 2,000 people and injuring over 4,000. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighbouring Thailand. 

Amid this, an image of a young child trapped under rubble has been widely shared on social media with the claim “Little kid trapped under the collapsed building in Mandalay, Myanmar”

Fact Check-

We conducted a reverse image search on Google with the viral image and the results led us to a video shared on Twitter in October 2024. The caption states, “This doesn’t showcase a Palestinian child trapped under rubble. More videos, uploaded by the same person showcase the girl was not under rubble but looking through a hole in the wall. When we analysed the comment section of the video, we found the source link to the viral video.

Using these hints, we conducted further searches and found that the video was originally uploaded on TikTok in October 2024, using the username “abuhudhaifaabsi2”. It shows the child peeking through a hole in a brick wall and playing. In fact, the viral image was available on online since before the earthquake.

Some of the videos also captured the child on the other side of the wall, where she was seen playing and the video explains that the child is playing by peeking through a hole in the brick wall. And the post states, “Thank God, nothing happened to the girl. She was playing in the drain in the house. She is not from Gaza. She is from Syria. Please don’t spread the video of her under the rubble. She is not hurt. Thank God.”

Based on these evidences we can understand that the image was taken in Syria and shows a girl playing in a hole in the house.

Conclusion–

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. This is an old image and not related to the Myanmar earthquake. The original image shows the girl was not under the rubble but rather looking through a hole in the wall and playing.
