On 28 March 2025 a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar, with an epicenter close to Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912 reportedly killing more than 2,000 people and injuring over 4,000. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighbouring Thailand.
Amid this, a video, appears to be a dashcam footage of a motorist stopping on a visibly shaking bridge is going viral on social media. The users who share the video claims that it depicts the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Myanmar.
The caption states, “The intensity of the earthquake can be seen through this video, look at the biker”.
Let’s check the truth
Fact Check-
We conducted a reverse image search on Google with the key frames of the viral video to find the original source. The results led us to a report by China Times, a Taiwanese daily newspaper, published on 26 June, 2024. The article, titled “0403 Hualien strong earthquake: Meilun Creek Bridge shakes so hard riders can’t stand steadily! Video released,” included the same viral video. It reported that the footage was captured during Taiwan’s April earthquake and showed a motorcyclist stopping on the Meilun Creek Bridge in Hualien.
Moving forward, we also came across an Instagram post shared on 7 April 2024, featuring the same viral video. The overlaid text in Traditional Chinese reads: “Taiwan: 7.2 earthquake. 7.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE.
For more clarification, we searched for Meilun River Bridge in Hualien on Google Maps and geolocated the place that can be seen below.
Taiwan was struck by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on 3 April, 2024. The epicenter was located 18 kilometers south of Hualien City. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.
