Clipped Video Of Rahul Gandhi Talking About Mahatma Gandhi’s Idea Of Non-Violence Going Viral.

Recently a video of Rahul Gandhi went viral on social media where he can be heard talking about Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violence. Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “Mahatma Gandhi was a great exponent of non-violence. But, Mahatma Gandhiji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam”.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. The viral video has been clipped. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to the official Facebook page of “Indian National Congress” where a speech by Rahul Gandhi was uploaded on 12 January 2019. The caption of the post read, “Shri Rahul Gandhi interacts with Indian diaspora in Dubai

Watch the full address of Congress President Rahul Gandhi to the Indian diaspora in Dubai.” The viral clip can be seen from the timestamp 24:20. Here, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “Mahatma Gandhi was a great exponent of non-violence. But, Mahatma Gandhiji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion, where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything…”

Moving forward, we found the same video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress on 11 January 2019. The description of the video reads, “Congress President Rahul Gandhi addresses Indian diaspora in Dubai”. From the timestamp 24:20, the viral clip can be seen where Rahul Gandhi says, “Mahatma Gandhi was a great exponent of non-violence. But, Mahatma Gandhiji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion, where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything…”

A comparison between the viral clip and the original video can be seen below. 

This makes it clear that Rahul Gandhi said that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, Islam, Christianity, Judaism and every great religion. He did not say that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence only from Islam. The viral video has been clipped.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. Rahul Gandhi didn’t say that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence only from Islam. Instead, he said that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, Islam, Christianity, Judaism and every great religion. The viral video has been clipped.
