However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. The video is old. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a YouTube channel where the viral video was uploaded on 27 April 2015. The description of the video reads, “Large cracks down the middle of a road in Nepal after a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the region on Saturday “April 25, 2015”.

Moving forward, we found the same video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of “The Telegraph” on 25 April 2015. The description of the video reads, “Footage shows large cracks opening up in a Kathmandu road, caused by a powerful earthquake that left at least 1,130 dead, according to local police.”

Further, we found the same footage in a report published in “The Guardian” on 26 April 2015. The report read, “Amateur video shows large cracks down the middle of a road in Nepal after a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the region on Saturday. The death toll from the quake rose to above 1,900 on Sunday as officials struggled to gauge the full scale of the disaster and the world rushed to provide desperately needed aid”

It is worth mentioning that a severe earthquake struck near the city of Kathmandu in central Nepal on 25 April 2015 killing about 9000 people.

This makes it clear that the viral video is not recent. It shows the situation of a road in Kathmandu, Nepal in the April 2015 earthquake.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. Although the video is from Nepal, it’s not from the recent earthquake. It shows the situation of a road in Kathmandu, Nepal, after the earthquake on 25 April 2015.
