Diwali, the Hindu festival that commemorates the triumph of light over darkness, was observed by Indians all around the world yesterday. People light oil lamps and candles on this day to represent the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Bursting fireworks is a prominent feature of the festivities.

In Nagaland firecrackers were permitted strictly between 8.00 pm and 10.00 pm and the police urged the residents to adhere to the existing ban on bursting it. In this scenario, a video of fireworks and glowing lights pointed at the sky is going viral on social media. In the video the stadium can be seen covered with heavy fire works. Users who share the video claim that the video is from Dimapur Stadium in Nagaland.

The caption of the video states, “Diwali Celebrations in Dimapur Stadium, Nagaland. See How Northeast is enjoying Diwali”.

We began our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google, the results led us to a similar video was uploaded to YouTube under the caption, “River Plate fans literally set the stadium on fire, a historic scene”. 

Using this hint, we looked further and found a media report dated 31 October 2024. The caption states, “After an Epic Welcome, the Monumental Stadium Gets Shut Down”. The article mentions that River Plate’s stadium was shut down due to unauthorized use of fireworks by the ‘millonarios’ fans during Tuesday’s match against Atlético Mineiro, as they fought for a spot in the Copa Libertadores final, according to official sources.”

The report further adds, the City of Buenos Aires’ Government Control Agency (AGC) imposed an administrative closure on the “Más Monumental” stadium for violating the permitted use of pyrotechnics. “Fireworks were authorized by the Football Committee in a specific area…for a set time, but that wasn’t followed, as they were launched all over the stadium,” the AGC explained in a statement.

Moving forward, we found the same video on the same news channel on Instagram with a caption “They say a picture’s worth a thousand words but seeing “El Monumental” leaves you speechless STUNNING welcome for River Plate in the Libertadores semifinals”.
