A disturbing video of an old man being brutally attacked by Police is going viral on social media with the claim that the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh. The caption of the video states, “Uttar Pradesh is heading towards a Jungle Raaj. Just look at how the Police is beating the old Man mercilessly. Mob lynching, Bulldozer on Homes of Innocent Muslims is common in UP now.
Fact Check-
We started our investigation with a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a video report published by the NDTV on 29 July 2022 with a caption “Shocking Video: Cop Dangles Elderly Man From Madhya Pradesh Rail Platform. The report carried the same viral video. It mentions that this incident took place in Madhya Pradesh in July 2022, not Uttar Pradesh.
Upon further search, we found the same video uploaded on YouTube channel of CNN-News18 on July 29, 2022. This was titled “Constable Caught On Camera Thrashing An Old Man In M. P’s Jabalpur Suspended.” The description part of the video states that “A police official from Rewa said that the police constable involved in the brutal thrashing of an old man at Jabalpur Railway Station has been suspended. The issue came to light after a video of the policeman beating an old man mercilessly and dragging him went viral on social media. The police constable was identified as Anant Sharma and the victim’s name is Gopal Prasad.”
As per the Indian Express report, “The Madhya Pradesh Police suspended a 20-year-old constable posted at Rewa’s Lour police station while the GRP has booked him for assault and criminal intimidation after a video of him thrashing and dragging an elderly man at Jabalpur railway station went viral”.
The report adds that the incident according to Jabalpur Government Railway Police (GRP), occurred on July 27, 2022, at around 3 pm when the constable, identified as Anand Sharma, was heading back to Rewa from Jabalpur after submitting a case diary at the high court. The elderly man, identified as Gopal Prasad, allegedly hurled abuses at the constable in an inebriated state.
Taking account of all these evidences, it is clear that an old incident from Madhya Pradesh going viral as Uttar Pradesh.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The viral video depicts an incident that occurred at the Jabalpur railway station in Madhya Pradesh in July 2022, not in Uttar Pradesh.
