Was Arvind Kejriwal accused of rape during his engineering days in IIT Kharagpur? Know the truth. 

A newspaper clip with report of accusation of rape against Arvind Kejriwal during his engineering degree days is going viral on social media. The newspaper clip dated back to 8 June 1987 reported that Arvind Kejriwal, 19-years-old then was detained by police over rape charge against him when he was studying in IIT Kharagpur. 

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This newspaper clip was created using newspaper clip generator websites. 

Sharing this image, a social media user wrote, “Arvind Kejriwal was a student in IIT Kharagpur from 1985 to 1989. When he was in 2nd year of his college, he raped a local girl. A complaint was filed with police and he was arrested. That’s why prison is not a new thing for him.”

Fact Check- 

A close look at the viral newspaper clip reveals that there are many formatting errors in it. The space between the words and paragraphs. Generally, big print media houses do not make such errors. This raised our suspicion if the viral newspaper clip is credible. 

After searching on Google using various keywords did not show any result about Arvind Kejriwal committing such a heinous crime as rape. We did not find any mainstream media or opposition parties ever raised voice against this issue. This led us to suspect that this newspaper clip had been created or generated. 

A Yandex Reverse Image Search led us to a similar image uploaded on a website (Archive). This newspaper clip was generated using an online newspaper clip generator website. 

This newspaper clip has some similarities with the viral one. The text on the extreme right side of the above clip is the same as the one in the viral image. Below you can see the comparison.

Conclusion: 

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be fake. The viral newspaper clip reporting about Arvind Kejriwal being involved in a rape crime in 1987 was created using newspaper generator website.
