The viral video of people attacking the police is old and not related to the ongoing farmers’ protests .It has been available on the internet since January 2021.

Farmer unions started their protest march to Delhi to force the Union government to meet their demands on 13 February. Protesting farmers on Friday declared to hold their 'Delhi Chalo' march till February 29 and decided to stay put along the Punjab-Haryana border until then. Pictures and videos from farmers' protest venues are widely circulated through social media.

Amidst this, a video of some people attacking police on the road has gone viral, with the claim that it depicts current footage from the ongoing farmers' protests in Delhi.

The caption of the video states, “So called farmers carrying swords and carrying out deadly attacks on the police, think how much the police is tolerating! #FarmersProtest #farmerprotests2024”

We began our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google, which led us to to a tweet by journalist Sudhir Chaudhary shared on January 27, 2021. Uploading the same video the caption states “Another picture of the peaceful protest of farmers”. (Translated from Hindi)

A relevant keyword search led us to this News18 Punjab/Haryana/Himachal report on Youtube, dated 27 January, 2021, featuring the viral video and headlined, “Another video of Delhi violence surfaced, more than 300 policemen injured in attack”.The visuals were reportedly from the then farmers protest against the three farm bills introduced by the central government.

The 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest was a protest against three farm acts that were passed by the Parliament of India in September 2020. Which began in Delhi on November 26, 2020, have been called by some observers as the “largest and longest peasants’ struggle in the history of modern India”.

As per reports, Nihang Sikhs participated in a tractor rally organised by protesting farmers on January 26, 2021.Nihang Sikhs were armed Sikh warriors clad in blue robes as seen in the viral video. The rally, heading towards Red Fort, encountered confrontations with police forces, resulting in casualties and injuries on both sides. Nihang Sikhs, adhering to tradition, are permitted to carry weapons and have been observed protecting demonstrators during protests.

Thus, we can see that the viral video is old and depicts an old incident. It has no connection to the ongoing farmers' protest.
