Video of spectators chanting ‘Bharat Tere Tukde Hoge…’ at Gautam Gambhir is Edited
A video has gone viral since yesterday, showing former Indian cricketer and Lok Sabha MP, Gautam Gambhir, making an obscene gesture at spectators. The spectators were trolling him, which made Gambhir irate. This created controversy and prompted the Delhi MP to explain his actions. Gambhir stated that the spectators were raising anti-India slogans, and unable to tolerate disrespect for his country, he reacted instinctively. Following this, a video, alleged to be the actual clip of the incident, surfaced on X (formerly Twitter). In the video, slogans of 'Bharat Tere Tukde Hoge...' meaning 'India will break into pieces' can be heard. Twitter users who shared this video claimed that it is the genuine clip, and anti-India slogans are clearly audible.
However, when we investigated the video, we found that the audio in the actual video has been edited. Here’s the detailed fact-check.
Fact Check
A watermark can be seen in the video. The watermark is of the X handle of the user who created it @xTripti. When we searched for this user, we found her account which is now deleted.
However, when the video went viral, she had clarified in a post that she had made this video for fun and gaining impressions. The screenshot of her post is still available on social media.
We did a keyword search on YouTube for the slogans of ‘Bharat Tere Tukde Hoge…’. This lead us to a video posted by Aaj Tak on 15 Feb 2016. The description of the video says, “ABVP has released a new video which show a group of JNU students allegedly shouting anti-national slogans.” Here’s the video for your reference.
After 33 seconds into the video, you can hear the slogan ‘Bharat Tere Tukde Hoge…’ This slogan is what we hear in the viral video as well. You can listen to the clipped video given below for better understanding. It is clear that this audio has been used to replace the audio in the original clip.
Thus, the user had taken the audio from this 7-year-old clip to edit the original video. In the original video, spectators can be heard chanting the name of former Indian Skipper Virat Kohli. We can see Gambhir walking out of the stadium when the spectators start chanting 'Kohli' directed at him. Gambhir responds to these chants by making an obscene gesture and then walks off.
