The unrest that erupted two months ago in Manipur is still continuing. The clash between Kuki and Meitei people had turned violent and incidents of death, vandalizing of buildings and vehicles, protests, etc are everyday news now.

In the backdrop of this, a video is going viral on social media. In the video, a few police and security personnel can be seen pushing a few people onto the ground and pointing guns at them, and kicking them.

However, fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an old video from the 2022 election in Manipur and is completely unrelated to recent violence.

What’s the claim?

Sharing the video, social media users are claiming that during the recent unrest in Manipur police can be seen torturing and beating Kuki tribe people.

Fact Check-

A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe of the viral video led us to the same video uploaded on Facebook in 2022. In the comment section, a user wrote, “Tengnoupal NPF workers were thrashed”

To know about the incident, Fact Crescendo contacted a local journalist from Manipur. We were informed that this is an old video from the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections. This incident took place after workers of a political party tried to vandalize voting machines. When the situation went out of control police had to fire a few rounds of bullets.

Considering the above information, a Google keyword search led us to the same video uploaded on YouTube on 5 March 2022. According to the information, this incident took place at a polling station in Manipur during the second round of voting in the Manipur Legislative Assembly elections in the Tengnoupal region.

We saw many similarities between the viral video and the video found on YouTube. Below you can see the comparison.

On 6 March 2022, The Sangai Express reported, Tengnoupal police had registered a case against six NPF workers for vandalizing EVMs and threatening polling officials. Around 40 NPF workers forcefully entered the polling station and obstructed the officials to perform their duties. They damaged the EVMs and were trying to flee, but security personnel caught and detained them.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The viral video is not related to recent Manipur violence. This is an old video from 2022 during the election in Manipur where security detained a few NPF workers for vandalizing EVMs. This is not a video of police beating Kuki tribe people.
