
Rahul Gandhi’s clipped videos have always been a source of entertainment and controversy for social media users. Earlier several times clipped videos of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have been made viral aiming to spread messages out of context. Fact Crescendo has previously debunked many such videos.
Recently a similar clipped video is doing rounds on social media claiming that Rahul Gandhi said that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from Islam. In the 24-second video clip, we can hear Rahul Gandhi says,
“Mahatma Gandhi was great exponent of non-violence, but Mahatma Gandhi ji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions from our great teacher. Mahatma Gandhi ji picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient philosophy, from Islam.”
The video is going viral with the caption “Ridiculous Gyaan from Rahul Gandhi: Mahatma Gandhi picked up IDEA of “NON VIOLENCE” from “Islam”
Fact Check-
We started our investigation by running a keyword search on Google to find the original video, we found the original video of Rahul Gandhi on the Facebook page of the Indian National Congress. In January 2019, while addressing Indian immigrants in Dubai, he spoke of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence. This video on Facebook is about twenty-eight minutes long.
We found that the viral video clip is a small part of a longer version of the original video. In the original video, Rahul Gandhi said that Mahatma Gandhi adopted his ideal of non-violence from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism.
In the original video, he says, “Mahatma Gandhi was great exponent of non-violence, but Mahatma Gandhi ji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions from our great teacher. Mahatma Gandhi ji picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient philosophy, from Islam from Christianity, from Judaisim, from every great religion where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything.”

This video of Rahul Gandhi was also tweeted by the Congress party’s official Twitter account. The caption of the post mentions “LIVE: Congress President @RahulGandhi addresses Indian diaspora in Dubai. #RahulGandhiInDubai.” The video was posted on 11 January 2019.
Conclusion- Fact Crescendo found that the above-mentioned video is clipped and is being shared out of context. In the original video, Rahul Gandhi is not saying that Gandhi ji has picked up the idea of non-violence from Islam but he states that the idea of non-violence was picked up from several other religion such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
