No, Instagram Does Not Let Users See Who Rewatched Their Stories

Consumer Safety Fact Check Misleading

A viral social media post claims that Instagram is introducing a feature allowing users to see exactly who rewatched their Stories. The claim has generated widespread attention because many users have long wondered whether Instagram tracks repeat Story views and whether their viewing habits could be exposed. However, our investigation found that the viral claim exaggerates what Instagram’s new feature actually does. Available evidence shows that Instagram Plus introduces Story Rewatch Insights, which display aggregate Story rewatch counts rather than the identities of people who replayed a Story.

Fact Check

The viral claim confuses rewatch statistics with viewer identities

The viral claim appears to confuse two separate pieces of information: who viewed a Story and how many times a Story was replayed. Story Rewatch Insights report the total number of replays rather than identifying which viewers generated them.

The evidence currently available indicates that Instagram is introducing Story Rewatch Insights, which reports how many times a Story has been replayed in total, not who replayed it.

Meta officially introduced Instagram Plus in June 2026 as an optional paid subscription designed to offer additional Story tools, deeper analytics, and profile customization while keeping the standard Instagram experience free. According to Meta’s official announcement, Story Rewatch Insights allow subscribers to “see how many times your Stories were rewatched.” The announcement does not state that users can identify which individual accounts replayed the Story.

Meta has never announced a feature revealing who rewatched a Story

We reviewed Meta’s official announcements and Instagram Help documentation relating to Instagram Plus.

The company describes Story Rewatch Insights as an analytics feature providing additional engagement information. Other premium features include:

  • Story Preview
  • Multiple Story Audiences
  • Story Spotlight
  • 48-hour Stories
  • Viewer List Search
  • Profile customization options

Notably absent is any feature stating that Instagram identifies the accounts responsible for Story rewatches. Instead, Meta separately lists “Viewer List Search”, which simply allows users to search within the existing Story viewer list. This feature helps locate whether a specific person viewed a Story, but it does not indicate whether that person watched it multiple times. (Source)

Independent reporting reaches the same conclusion

Multiple technology news organizations have reported on Instagram Plus after Meta confirmed the subscription’s rollout.

TechCrunch reported that subscribers can see how many people have rewatched their Stories, based on information provided directly by Meta. The report does not state that Instagram identifies the individual users responsible for those rewatches.

Similarly, Engadget reported that Instagram Plus provides statistics about how often Stories were rewatched, alongside viewer-list search and other Story features. Again, no reporting suggests that usernames of repeat viewers are disclosed.

Early user discussions align with Meta’s description

Moreover, early users testing Instagram Plus have discussed the feature extensively on Reddit. Several subscribers specifically asked whether Story Rewatch Insights reveal which users replayed Stories. Responses from users who tested the feature consistently reported that Instagram only displays the total number of rewatches and does not identify who performed them.

Although Reddit discussions are anecdotal and should not be treated as official documentation, they are consistent with Meta’s published description and reporting from multiple technology news outlets.

Standard Instagram Stories have never identified repeat viewers

Instagram’s existing Story system already allows users to see who viewed a Story while it remains available.

However, it has never shown how many times an individual person viewed the Story, whether someone replayed it, or which viewers watched it multiple times.

The introduction of Story Rewatch Insights appears to expand analytics by reporting aggregate replay activity rather than changing Instagram’s longstanding privacy model.

In other words, users can already see who viewed their Story. Instagram Plus may additionally show how many total rewatches occurred. It does not combine these two pieces of information into a list showing who rewatched the Story.

Conclusion

The claim that Instagram allows users to see who rewatched their Stories is misleading. Meta’s official description of Instagram Plus indicates that subscribers may see how many times their Stories were replayed through Story Rewatch Insights.

Neither Meta’s official announcement nor independent reporting supports the claim that Instagram identifies the users who replay a Story. Instead, the available evidence indicates that Story Rewatch Insights provide only aggregate replay metrics, not the identities of repeat viewers.
