The most wanted Mexican drug lord, El Mencho ( Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes), was killed in a Mexican military operation on February 22, 2026. Within hours of confirmation of his death, cartel gunmen launched retaliatory attacks. Against this backdrop, a video of burning vehicles went viral on social media claiming it to be recent footage from Mexico. Sharing the video on Instagram, a user wrote, “State of war: Mexico is on maximum alert following the confirmation of the death of ‘El Mencho’, a leader of the CJNG.

The nation is experiencing:

– Narcobloqueos

– Vehicles set on fire

– Highways closed

The situation raises questions about the future of drug trafficking in the region.

However, upon investigation, we discovered that the claim was misleading. The viral video is old and unrelated to the current situation in Mexico. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check 

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a tweet on September 10, 2025, that contained the viral video. According to the tweet, the video shows the Gen Z protest in Nepal.

Taking this clue, we conducted a relevant keyword search, which led us to a Nepali report published on September 16, 2025. The report contained an image similar to the screenshots from the viral video. 

According to the report, a large number of vehicles were burnt down during the Gen Z protest in Nepal.

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to the current situation in Mexico.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show the current situation in Mexico. This is an old video from the Gen Z protest in Nepal.
