Recently a screenshot of an article published in Punjab Kesari went viral on social media. According to the article, gold worth ₹1.28 lakh crore has gone missing from the country’s treasury. Sharing the screenshot, a user wrote, “Chowkidar is in a deep sleep Or Chowkidar Hi Chor Hai.

RBI gold reserve data revealed.  Gold worth   Rs 1.28 lakh crore missing from the country’s treasury, according to RBI data.

NO ENQUIRY,  NO INVESTIGATION,  NO RESIGNATION.”

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check 

We started our investigation by conducting a relevant keyword search. This led us to the official X handle of PIB Fact Check. We found a tweet on February 16, 2026, refuting the viral claim. The tweet read, “Some social media posts & news articles claim that gold worth ₹1.28 lakh crore has gone missing from the country’s treasury.

, there has been a recorded decline in the value of gold reserves in the week ending February 6, but no gold has gone missing from the gold reserves.

We found two press releases on the official website of the Reserve Bank of India on 6 February 2026 and 13 February 2026 respectively. According to the data provided, the gold reserve currently stood at $123.476 Billion; $14.207 billion down from the previous week.

There’s no mention of missing gold reserves on the RBI website.

This makes it clear that the claim is misleading.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. According to the RBI data, there has been a recorded decline in the value of gold reserves, but no gold has gone missing from the gold reserves.
