Old footage from Guwahati falsely shared as recent protests in Iran

This viral video is from Zubeen Garg’s funeral procession in Guwahati, Assam.

Iran has been experiencing significant protests over the past three weeks. Demonstrations have taken place in various cities throughout the country, fuelled by widespread discontent with the Islamic Republic government and a worsening economic crisis. Iranians have taken to the streets against their authoritarian government for the past 17 years, but the current demonstrations are the largest yet. Amidst this, a video of a massive crowd on the street is going viral on social media and the accompanying description, indicating that this is a protest taking place in Iran.

Fact Check- 

By closely analysing the video, we spotted the Punjab National Bank sign. So, we can confirm that the video is from India.  We then conducted a reverse image search of the video key frames and found that the same footage uploaded on Instagram on 21 September, 2025.  According to the caption, the footage is of singer Zubin Garg’s last journey in Guwahati, Assam. This indicates that the viral video shows the last journey of the renowned singer Zubeen Garg, in Guwahati, Assam.

The India Times reported on Subin Garg’s last journey on 22 September, 2025, and the Deccan Herald on the 23rd.

Thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects. Fans waited in long queues throughout the night to catch a last glimpse of the singer, who was displayed in a glass coffin adorned with traditional Assamese gamosas. Many paid their respects with flowers and gamosas, while others captured the emotional moments on their mobile phones,” the report said. The streets from the airport were packed with grieving fans, who showered the slow-moving, flower-decked ambulance with petals and gamosas.

The viral video shows the visuals are from the funeral procession of singer Zubeen Garg in Guwahati on 19 September, after he died in a scuba diving accident.

While protests against Iran’s regime are ongoing in Iran, this video shows the last rites of Assamese singer Zubin Garg, who died in Guwahati in September 2025. The footage has no connection to Iran.
