On December 8, 2025, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, Sanriku, Japan. It generated tsunamis that reached heights of up to 70 cm along the coast of northern Japan. Against this backdrop, a video of houses shaking during an earthquake went viral on social media claiming it to be from the recent earthquake in Japan.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was misleading. The viral video is old. Here’s the fact check.
Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to an Instagram post on 18 January 2024that contained a similar video to the viral clip. According to the caption, the video is from Japan.

But we noticed that the video is flipped. A comparison between the screenshots from the viral video and the Instagram video can be seen below.

We found a similar video uploaded on X on 14 January 2024.
Moving forward, conducting a relevant keyword search in Japanese, we found the viral video on a Japanese YouTube channel uploaded on February 1, 2024.

According to the description, the video shows the earthquake in Japan on January 1, 2024.
This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Japan.
Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show the recent earthquake in Japan. It shows the Japan Earthquake in 2024.
