
On 23 November 2025, the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia erupted after almost 12000 years. Against this backdrop, a video of a volcanic eruption shot from an aircraft went viral on social media claiming it to be the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia.
However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The viral video doesn’t show the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia. Here’s the fact check.
Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a YouTube channel, where the viral video was uploaded on September 5, 2025.

Though there was no information provided with the video, it’s clear that the video predates the Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption.
We found the video on another YouTube channel uploaded on September 5, 2025.

The user used the hashtag “ai” in the description.
Similar videos can be seen here and here which predate the Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption in Ethiopia.
Moving forward, we used AI Detector tools to check whether the video is AI-generated or not. According to the AI Detector tools, the video is AI-generated.

Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show the Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption in Ethiopia. The viral video has been available online since at least September 2025. Moreover, according to the AI-Detection tools, the video is AI-generated.
