Mumbai continues to witness heavy downpour for the fourth consecutive day, disrupting normal life for residents. The IMD (India Meteorological Department) has issued an Orange Alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across the metropolis. Now linking to this, a video of Gateway of India in Mumbai getting flooded has been making rounds on social media. The video shows powerful waves crashing against the iconic monument and the area around it completely submerged in water.

Fact Check- 

By performing a reverse image search on Google, the results led us to a similar video uploaded by The Global Exhibition, on 23 July, 2021 under the caption Mumbai Rain, Gateway of India, Taj Hotel

Upon further keyword search, we discovered a tweet by ABC News along with a similar video. It was accompanied by the information that “Mumbai’s waterfront and the landmark Gateway of India, were inundated, as Cyclone Tauktae moved up India’s west coast. The cyclone had wind speeds of up to 100 mph, according to officials”. Which you can see below.

Also, various media outlets like News 18, Indiatoday.in , IndianExpress.com, published a detailed report with the same video at that time. As per the reports, the incident is from when Cyclone Tauktae hit Maharashtra in May 2021.

So, we can understand that the viral video showing massive waves hitting near Gate way of India is old and not related to the recent rain in Mumbai.

Conclusion- 

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. While the city is witnessing heavy rains, the viral video is from May 2021, when Cyclone Tauktae hit Maharashtra.
