A CCTV footage of a bike rider being attacked with a sword by a man has gone viral on social media. In the video, we can see some women standing nearby see this and rush to save the victim, the man with the sword in his hand attacks them as well. Users are sharing this video with a communal claim that it shows the condition of Hindus in West Bengal. It is claimed that a Muslim man has attacked a Hindu bike rider in West Bengal.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a several news reports regarding this incident. The report states, “A lawyer was attacked by a neighbour with a sword at Kapila Colony in Samrala. The incident occurred on 11 August morning when the victim was leaving his home for office on a motorcycle. The lawyer’s wife and mother, who came to his rescue, were also attacked by the assailant”.

As per reports, the incident took place in Punjab, not West Bengal, as claimed in the viral posts. 

The report further adds, when lawyer Kultar Singh was leaving for his office on his bike, his neighbour Billu alias Surinder Singh attacked him. The accused also attacked his wife and mother who came to rescue him, due to which all three were injured. All are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Samrala. After getting information about the case, the police reached the spot and registered a case on the basis of the complaint and started investigation.

According to the Hindustan Times report, the name of the accused is given as Surinder Singh alias Billu and the name of the victim is given as Kultar Singh. The report quoted ASI Davinder Singh as saying that the entire incident was captured on CCTV. A case has been registered against the accused under several sections including attempt to murder and he has been arrested. 

For more clarification we reached out to the Samrala police station, officials confirmed to us that the accused and the victim belong to the Sikh community. There is no communal angle in this case. The victim had recently installed a CCTV camera outside his house. Billu was very angry about this. 

Conclusion- 

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This video is from Ludhiana, Punjab, not West Bengal. Neither the victim nor the accused in this incident belongs to the Muslim community.
