Kanwar pilgrims in Uttar Pradesh attempting to stir trouble by inserting a piece of bone in their vegetarian dish- What’s the truth

Communal Misleading Political

The group causing trouble is not Kanwar pilgrims. This incident took place a week after the Kanwar pilgrimage ended.

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage, dedicated to Lord Shiva, typically takes place during the Hindu month of Shravan (Sawan). Devotees, known as Kanwariyas, travel on foot to collect water from the Ganga River at Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri and to offer at Shiva temples.

Against this backdrop, a video has gone viral on social media claiming that in Uttar Pradesh, pilgrims who had come to eat at a hotel during this year’s Kanwar Yatra are causing trouble. The caption of the post states, “During KanwarYatra, Kanwaris had vandalised the dhaba after finding a chicken bone in their veg biryani. Dhaba owner has released CCTV footage, that clearly shows the Kanwaris putting the bones on their own plates”.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation with keyword and a reverse image search on Google and the results led us several news reports regarding this incident. The incident took place on the night of 31 July at Biryani Bay, located near Shastri Chowk in the Cantonment area. According to a report by Hindustan Times, a group of around eight to 10 men had dined at the restaurant, ordering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian biryanis. Not long after the food arrived, one of them loudly claimed to have found a meat bone in his vegetarian biryani.

Sensing that something was off, the restaurant staff immediately called the police, who arrived and defused the situation. But what followed exposed the group’s deceit. CCTV footage from inside the restaurant revealed that one of the men had passed a bone to another, who then quietly slipped it into the vegetarian biryani before staging the entire drama.

The report does not mention anywhere that the people who caused trouble at the restaurant were Kanwar Yatra pilgrims. Moreover, it is said that some of them had ordered meat dishes and the leftovers were put in the vegetarian dishes. When the reports were checked, it was reported that this year’s Kanwar Yatra ended on 23 July, 2025. But this incident took place 7 days after that. The news report shows the youths taking out pieces of bone from their plates and causing trouble.

As per NDTV report, a major controversy broke out at Biryani Bay restaurant in Gorakhpur after a group of customers alleged that a bone was found in their vegetarian thali and accused the owners of religious insensitivity. But CCTV footage tells a different story: the video shows a customer secretly placing a bone from a non-veg plate into the veg plate, sparking an uproar in the restaurant. Restaurant owner Ravikar Singh claims the incident was staged to tarnish their reputation, while police intervened after reviewing the evidence.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The group causing trouble is not Kanwar pilgrims. This incident took place a week after the Kanwar pilgrimage ended and it is unrelated to Kanwar yatra.
