Video From November 2018 Going Viral As The Recent Earthquake In Alaska.

After a 7.3 earthquake hit the coast of Alaska on 16 July 2025, a video went viral on social media. The video is a compilation of two different clips. The first clip shows a home security camera video of a family escaping the earthquake and the second clip shows cars being shaken during the quake. Sharing the video, users claimed that the clips are from the recent earthquake in Alaska.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was partly false. The first clip is old. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check 

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a website where the viral video was uploaded on 5 December 2018. According to the voiceover, the person is Jesse Elmore, a resident in Alaska, who, along with his children and wife escaped the earthquake.

We found the same video in a report published on 1 December 2018. According to the report, the video shows Jesse Elmore, a resident in Anchorage, Alaska, escaping the earthquake on 30 November 2018 with his children and wife.

According to reports, “Back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.8 struck the Anchorage, Alaska area just before 8:30 a.m. local time Friday, Nov. 30, 2018. A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted”.

Moving forward, conducting a reverse image search of the screenshots from the second clip, we found a tweet on the official X handle of the Alaska Earthquake Center, the earthquake monitoring agency of Alaska, where the clip was uploaded on 17 July 2025. According to the caption, the video shows the recent earthquake in Alaska.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is partly false. Although the second clip shows the recent earthquake in Alaska, the first clip is old. It shows the earthquake in Anchorage, Alaska on 30 November 2018.
