The Air India passenger plane from Ahmedabad to London carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed just moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on 12 June, 2025 afternoon. The aircraft lost altitude within minutes and crashed in the Meghani Nagar area near the airport, erupting in flames. Visuals from the crash site showed a thick plume of grey smoke rising from the ground. In this context, several images and videos are surfed on social media with the claim that they show the Ahmedabad plane crash.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the first image and the results led us to several media reports from August 2020 featuring the same image, confirming that the picture is old and unrelated to the Ahmedabad plane crash.

According to reports, on 7 August, 2020, Air India Express Flight IX-1344 from Dubai crashed while landing in Kozhikode, Kerala under heavy rain. The Boeing 737-800 arriving from Dubai went off the runway, and the main section of the plane was torn wide open as a result of the crash. Over 100 passengers were injured, and 21 people died, including both pilots.

The reverse image search of second image led us to an article published on  India TV on 22 May 2010 featuring the same image. This indicates that the image predates Ahmedabad plane crash and it has no link to it. The report states, “The Air India Express passenger plane flying from Dubai overshot the runway after landing at the Mangalore airport, killing 158 people. Only eight people survived”.

According to another report, on 22 May 2010, Air India Express Flight 812 from Dubai overshot the tabletop runway at Mangalore airport, crashed off a cliff, and caught fire, killing 158 of 166 onboard, with eight survivors. Investigators found the captain was heavily asleep during the flight, which likely impaired his landing judgment.

Taking account of all these evidences, we can understand that both the images were old and unrelated to the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be False. Both images are old and not related to the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. The first image is from the Kozhikode plane crash in 2020, and the second is from the Mangalore crash in 2010.
