Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a video report on the official YouTube of ABP News on 1 April 2025. We found the viral clip in the video. Mamata Banerjee can be heard speaking in Hindi, the translation of which is “Look at what Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda have said? I believe in the religion of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. But I do not believe in the dirty religion that this ‘Jumla Party’ has deliberately created. This is even against Hinduism”. Here, it is clearly visible that Mamata Banerjee has never called Hinduism a dirty religion.
We found a longer version of the viral video on the official Facebook page of Mamata Banerjee, recorded live. The caption of the video reads, “Eid Celebration at Red Road- 31st March 2025″. The video shows Mamata Banerjee wishing the people on the occasion of Eid and then she criticises the BJP and the Left parties. During her speech, she accused the BJP of doing politics on religion calling the BJP a ‘Jumla Party’ and saying that she does not believe in the ‘ dirty religion’ created by them deliberately. Further, she says, ” Not every Hindu is against you, not every Christian is against you . There are some political leaders who do business in this. ” Mamata Banerjee also accuses BJP of inciting riots.
According to a report published in Live Hindustan, “Accusing the BJP of trying to incite “communal riots through divisive politics” in the state, Mamata Banerjee said the BJP’s “dirty religion” was against the true principles of Hindutva.”
A comparison between the viral video and the original video can be seen below.
This makes it clear that Mamata Banerjee didn’t say the Hindu religion is a ‘dirty religion’. The viral video is incomplete.
Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. Mamata Banerjee didn’t say that the Hindu religion is a ‘dirty religion’. She accused the BJP of trying to incite communal riots through divisive politics. In this context, Banerjee said that she doesn’t believe in the ‘dirty religion’ created by the BJP, which is against the true principles of Hindutva.
