One-Year-Old Video From Japan Going Viral As The Recent Tibet Earthquake.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet on 7 January 2025. After this incident, many photos and videos surfaced on social media showing the earthquake-hit region. Against this backdrop, a video of a person trying to stand steady during an earthquake went viral on social media claiming it to be from the recent earthquake in Tibet.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The video is old and not from the recent earthquake in Tibet. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a website where the viral video was uploaded on 4 February 2024. According to the caption of the video, it shows an earthquake in Japan from January 2024.

Taking this clue, we conducted a relevant keyword search. We found the video uploaded on a YouTube channel on 5 February 2024. The viral clip can be seen from the timestamp 43:00. The description of the video reads, “A powerful 7.6 earthquake on January 1 struck Ishikawa prefecture. A dashcam video shows the moment of impact as well as the resulting tsunami.”

Moving forward, we found the same video uploaded on another YouTube channel on 5 February 2024. The description of the video reads, “Dashcams on a car capture the moment a powerful earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, and the tsunami that swept the vehicle away afterwards.” The viral clip can be seen from the timestamp 40:00.

We found the same video on the YouTube channel “TBS NEWS DIG Powered by JNN”. The video was uploaded on 3 February 2024. The viral clip can be seen from the timestamp 0:26.

According to the caption of the video, the clip shows an earthquake in Japan in January 2024.

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and from Japan.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video is not from the recent earthquake in Tibet. It shows an earthquake in Japan in January 2024.
