A recent viral photograph showing Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde having lunch has sparked controversy, with claims circulating that he ate non-veg on the auspicious day of Ram Navami.

Fact Crescendo received this image with fact-check requests on our WhatsApp Tipline (9049053770).

We found that the viral claim is false. CM Shinde was having a vegetarian meal in the photograph.

WHAT’S THE CLAIM?

In the viral image, CM Shinde can be seen having lunch with a social media food vlogger Kamiya Jani. It has been shared with a caption that reads – “This is Maharashtra's adopted son, Chief Minister Eknath Ji Shinde Maharaj, created by BJP and RSS. He went to Umred tehsil, 40 km from Nagpur city, to campaign for his candidate. And when he felt hungry, he enjoyed non-veg at Savji Bhojnalaya, and that too on Ram Navami. This is Hindutva.”

FACT-CHECK

Keyword search led us to a video uploaded on food vlogger Kamiya Jani’s YouTube and Instagram page called Curly Tales.

In the caption, she wrote, "On the auspicious day of Ram Navami, I enjoyed a very hearty vegetarian Saoji meal with Maharashtra’s CM Shri Eknath Shinde. Local women of the [Umred] village prepared a very special vegetarian Saoji meal for us, and it was super delicious."

In the video, CM Shinde also describes the dishes on his plate: Vangyache Bharit (Mashed brinjal), Vangyachi Bhaji (Brinjal vegetable), and Patodi/Patwadi (gram flour fudge).

On the Curly Tales website, it is reported that local women from the village prepared a special vegetarian Saoji spread. The vegetarian version, while omitting meat, captures the essence of Saoji beautifully.

Saoji cuisine is a traditional culinary style from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, known for its spicy and flavorful dishes, often prepared with a special blend of spices called Saoji masala.

The spices used in these dishes have about 32 ingredients and are of three types. Bhukri masala has 12 ingredients, while kala masala has 20, and batlo is a fresh paste of garlic, ginger, cumin and onion.

While Saoji food is widely known for its non-vegetarian dishes, in this video, meat was not used, and only Saoji spices were used to create vegetarian dishes on the occasion of Ram Navami. s

CONCLUSION

Hence, it is clear that CM Shinde was not eating non-veg on the day of Ram Navami. He was enjoying a vegetarian Saoji meal.
